Credit crunch hits Carshalton and Wallington as unemployment figures rise - Brake

2.00.51pm GMT Thu 18th Dec 2008

Tom Brake, MP for Carshalton and Wallington has expressed deep concern at the latest unemployment figures recently released by the House of Commons Library showing that the number of people claiming job seekers allowance in Carshalton and Wallington has risen to 1,337 in November from 1,213 in October, a rise of over 10%.

He said: "These figures show that Carshalton and Wallington is suffering from the severe economic downturn brought on by the credit crisis. The Labour government must get a handle on the situation soon and stabilise the economy or else unemployment could rise to levels not seen for a generation."

Tom also noted that whilst unemployment figures in his constituency were on the up, they were still lower than in 1997, when the Conservatives were last in power in Carshalton and Wallington as well as nationally. The unemployment figures are also still amongst the lowest in the country.
