London's Lib Dem MEP attacks Tories over Heathrow fence-sitting

1.47.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 3rd Apr 2008

London's Liberal Democrat MEP Baroness Sarah Ludford has attacked the Tories for sitting on the fence about a third runway at Heathrow, as shown by their stance in the recent Parliamentary debate.

Baroness Ludford called on the Conservatives to come clean:

"The Tories are offering nothing more than weasel words. They claim to care about the environment and the terrible effect a third runway would have on local residents, but in reality they are happy to let it happen."

"Their claim that they would deal with a third runway through the planning process is no more than an excuse and a figleaf. They are trying to face both ways but falling flat on their face."

"They should either admit they support the big corporate interests of BA and BAA in the bid for a third runway, as Labour does, or join the Lib Dems in our clear and absolute opposition to it."
