Local councillor takes action on wildlife

11.25.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 11th Mar 2008

Residents in Haringey will be informed of local nature and wildlife events on the Council website after requests by local Lib Dem councillor Lyn Weber. Following London Frog Day on 9th March 2008, Cllr Weber was keen to get Haringey's residents more involved in local nature events and have access to information about wildlife in Haringey.

Cllr Lyn Weber (Crouch End) comments:

"On a warm, tranquil day it was unavoidably relaxing to visit Cllr Bob Hare's allotment last year. The impression has been with me for a whole year now. The established man made pond teemed with insects, frogs and plants. The local Heron circled enviously, nature in a Capital City at its best and in Haringey. Yet only a few yards away the main road to Alexander Palace.

"Haringey don't have a frog day but there are lots of voluntary organisations out there that provide talks and take folk on walks such as Lee Valley Bats. Haringey's web communications team have agreed to add an extra category of 'Nature & Wildlife' to the Haringey website site for organisations to advertise their nature events.

"Education is a must - we all need to understand how animals and nature behave so that we better understand how not to destroy it for future generations. Nature events such as walks and talks help to educate."

Newly elected councillor Rachel Allison (Highgate) added:

"An allotment or garden, or even just a window box or balcony, can all give wildlife a helping hand. Avoiding pesticides and toxic types of slug pellet is important for all sorts of wildlife. The frogs on my allotment are a real pleasure to see in spring - one of the first signs that life is waking up again - and really help keep the numbers of slugs down."
