My Transport Policies Will Be Fair, Green and Safe - Paddick9.01.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 14th Feb 2008 Liberal Democrat Candidate for London Mayor, Brian Paddick, will today unveil his transport policies for London. Brian Paddick said: "These policies are fair, green and safe." " Currently 20% of Congestion Charge revenue is raised by fines because people simply forget to pay. I'll introduce a system where people are billed through the post - a much fairer and more efficient way of collecting the Congestion Charge." "Buses often terminate short of their destination because they are running late which results in Oystercard users having to pay twice. I will introduce a scheme where people can travel on an unlimited number of buses within an hour. You can do this on the tube, so why not on buses?" "A Greater London Congestion Charge will cost out-of-towners £10 to enter the capital. Londoners and commercial vehicles would be exempt but the thousands who drive into the capital each day would be affected. This is about getting people out of their cars and onto public transport. These plans would have a real impact on congestion and pollution, unlike the politically loaded plans unveiled by the Mayor on Tuesday. This will make a significant contribution to improving London's public transport system, in the suburbs as well as in the centre" "I will keep Heathrow as a major transport hub using high speed rail links to destinations within the UK and near continent. Keeping London's pre-eminent position as a major financial centre is not dependent on a third runway." "I will introduce a designated carriage on every tube train that will have a guard from 9pm until the last train every night. There will be a similar scheme operating on the 10 worst bus routes until 1am Sunday - Wednesday and 4am Thursday - Saturday. Women and the elderly are increasingly being excluded from going out at night: taxis are too expensive and public transport is not safe."
