MPs Question delays over Waterloo Terminal

11.13.39am UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 20th Nov 2007

Vincent Cable, MP, has written to the rail minister following revelations that four of the five Eurostar platforms at Waterloo International are to be "mothballed".

"My understanding is that the pledge given to me and other local MPs by Ruth Kelly regarding new local Windsor line services from platform 20 will be honoured at the end of next year. But there is no reason why the wider potential of Waterloo International is being neglected. I realise that changing platform use requires some investment but it is difficult to believe that it makes sense to spend £500,000 a year to keep the platforms idle when the trains are so overcrowded".

SW Trains want the platforms for better services to Southampton, Winchester and Basingstoke, among other destinations, but there are disagreements with the government over the scale of investment needed.
