Elderly Struggle without lifts

11.11.58am UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 20th Nov 2007

Vincent Cable, MP, has asked Richmond Housing Partnership to help elderly people who are struggling to climb stairs in blocks of flats without lifts. He has taken up the case of pensioners in Stanborough Close and Hemming Close in Hampton. In the latter case several storeys are involved and the stairs are out of doors.

Vincent Cable said: "RHP is modernising its stock in different ways but these elderly people are being overlooked. If they are to stay in their own homes, they do need lifts and I have been asked for priority to be given to this improvement. One of our key priorities as a society is to help elderly people live at home rather than become dependent on institutional care and if that is to happen there has to be access".
