Heathrow Consultation now expected this week

11.10.35am UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 20th Nov 2007

There are now expectations that the transport secretary, Ruth Kelly, will, this week, launch the three month consultation leading to a third runway and sixth terminal (by 2020) and 'mixed mode' operation - greatly boosting the number of flights - by 2015.

Vincent Cable MP said: "there is a major battle looming up over airport expansion in which local concerns about noise and wider environmental concerns about green house gas emissions come together. The three month consultation will be crucial as an opportunity for residents to make their views known since, I fear, the government will try to ram through any planning application using new planning legislation, to by-pass local councils".
