Tom Brake, Liberal Democrat MP for Carshalton and Wallington and Shadow Spokesman for London, and Paul Burstow MP for Sutton and Cheam were on hand to congratulate newly elected Liberal Democrat Mayoral Candidate Brian Paddick on Tuesday on the Southbank. Brian Paddick was educated at Sutton Grammar and his mother lives in Sutton.

Mr Paddick, the former Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police said, "I am enormously proud to be announced today as the Liberal Democrat candidate for London Mayor.

"For too long, Londoners have been denied a serious debate on the future of their city.

"Less crime, better transport, cleaner air and fewer Londoners living in poverty are all crucial in making sure that London remains one of the most exciting cities in the world.

"I strongly believe that the position of Mayor can be a powerful source for good. During the coming months, I will be explaining to people throughout London why the time has come for a change."

Tom Brake MP, said of Mr Paddick's nomination, "Brian is serious about London. He has the experience to deliver, something Boris doesn't offer, and he is also committed to listening to Londoners, which Ken Livingstone isn't."

Sutton and Cheam MP, Paul Burstow, who said, "Brian Paddick's local roots run deep in Sutton. His mother lives in Sutton and he went to school in Sutton. He has the knowledge and experience necessary to serve both London's suburbs and inner city. He is the only candidate who can beat Livingstone."
