MP Declares War On Excess Packaging

10.52.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 1st May 2007

Local MP Susan Kramer is pressing the government to legislate to deal with the mountains of excess packaging that people acquire as a result of a trip to the supermarket.

She is one of more than 100 MPs who are lobbying for change in a motion before Parliament/

Susan Kramer said:

" We are living with mountains of waste generated by the supermarket chains. I started campaigning on this issue three years ago before being elected.

"Consumers need to see changes to the way the big high street food stores run their businesses.

"Supermarkets need to reduce packaging on goods, encourage the re-use of plastic bags, help by having places for packaging to be returned and recycled.

Susan Kramer would back a Bill to deal with problems and is already supporting a move that would allow customers to take packaging back to shops.
