MP Opposes Plans To Streamline Development Laws In Favour Of Supermarkets

6.24.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Sun 29th Apr 2007

Developers may get their hands on more sites for supermarkets under government plans to loosen planning regulations. MP Susan Kramer believes it could blight the businesses of small shops in Richmond and Kingston and should be opposed.

Susan Kramer said: "Currently developers have to pass a 'needs test' to show that there is a demand for new supermarkets.

"The current system is far from perfect but if the rule is relaxed we could see more large food retail developments impacting on our neighbourhood stores.

"Many shops struggle already, squeezed by supermarkets and the increasing trend in some areas to online shopping.

"We cannot afford to let the government create a new regime which could kill of long established local businesses and the creation of new small shops."
