Estate Agents Should Pass Exams To Trade

2.25.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 23rd Apr 2007

Local MP Susan Kramer has stepped up her campaign for professional qualifications for estate agents saying that it is the missing link in the housing chain. She has used the committee stage of the Estate Agents' Bill in Parliament to press for a minimum standard of competence through licensing and entrance examinations.

Her call is backed by the National Association of Estate Agents.

Susan Kramer said:

"Buying a home is a big life decision for most people and it is strange that in the area of house sales and purchase the lack of formally qualified estate agents is the missing link in the housing chain.

"We wouldn't dream of having our conveyancing work done by an unqualified person and we expect our mortgage lenders to comply with the requirements of the financial regulator.

"The government should act to correct this situation."
