Tom Brake, MP for Carshalton and Wallington, dropped into WH Smith's in Wallington on Friday to pop his used Christmas Cards into their recycling box.

WH Smith is one of a number of retailers which has joined forces with the Woodland Trust to recycle Christmas Cards. With Tescos and TK Maxx, they aim to recycle 90 million out of a total of over 1 billion Christmas Cards that are sent in the UK every year.

Tom Brake, who heard about the scheme's success from Maria Petrillo, the store supervisor said, "Christmas is a time of great fun but also considerable consumption. Recycling Christmas Cards is just one of the ways of cutting back on festive waste."

The scheme ends at the end of January.
