Smaller Shops Getting Squeezed by Cut Price Supermarkets

2.36.02pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 23rd Jan 2007

MP Susan Kramer believes that the new supermarket report from the Competition Commission is further evidence that smaller shops in the Richmond and Kingston areas are in danger of being squeezed out by the

big food chains.

Susan Kramer said:

"I hope this inquiry will have some teeth when it reports back later in the year.

"The next phase is crucial as it will set out to look at the impact on the big supermarket chains on smaller shops.

" In Richmond and Kingston people have seen businesses go under as they struggle to compete with famous supermarket brands who are able to entice consumers in with special offers.

"I know local businesses and residents have worries about the acquisition of sites for supermarket expansion such as the one between Barnes and Mortlake on White Hart Lane which is currently a car showroom.

" Large chains must not be allowed to push specialist stores and village shops out of business are they are part of creating sustainable communities. Local people must be able to decide the right balance."
