Job Cuts at Teddington National Physical Laboratory

1.36.41pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 22nd Jan 2007

Today (Monday) the National Physical Laboratory in Teddington announces the loss of 40 jobs as a result of restructuring and the pressure of rising costs notably energy costs. Vincent Cable MP has discussed the job losses with Steve McQuillen, the Chief Executive, who explained that they were in management and support, rather than scientific staff and follows a squeeze on funding at the Department of Trade and Industry which provides the main contract.

Vincent Cable said: "It is obviously a matter for concern when there are local job losses including redundancies. Overall, however, the NPL is in very good shape and has had years of expanding professional work which has made it one of the country's main centres of scientific excellence."
