Twickenham Tax Office Saved from Axe

3.52.56pm UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 10th Jan 2007

In a cull of tax offices and jobs in London, the Twickenham office - employing 111 people and providing an enquiry centre for local businesses - has been spared. 12 of the 26 offices, including Surbiton and Sutton are to go with the shedding of over 1,000 jobs.

Vincent Cable MP said: "These cuts are part of an effort by the Chancellor to cut manpower in the public sector and I guess not too many people will lose sleep over a loss of tax bureaucracy. But over 100, mainly local, people will be relieved that their jobs are safe. And local businesses that need advice on our increasingly complex tax system still have somewhere local to go."
