Tom Brake Praises Sutton Shopmobility's Local Efforts
3.50.19pm UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 10th Jan 2007
Tom Brake, MP for Carshalton and Wallington, visited Sutton Shopmobility in the St Nicholas Centre Car Park in Sutton on Monday. As a Sutton charity, Shopmobility assists people with mobility problems to shop in the local area.
Mr Brake said, "Without the efforts of Shopmobility's staff, many people with mobility problems would find it hard or indeed impossible to shop in Sutton."
Shopmobility has received Lottery Funding over the past three years in order to help it operate a seven day a week free wheelchair and scooter loan service. However, the funds will run out soon and if Shopmobility is unable to secure additional funding, it will have to severely scale-back its activities in Sutton from April onwards.
Sutton Shopmobility Chairman Ted Gates has noted that for 17 years, Shopmobility has served as a lifeline to hundreds of thousands of people who would not have had the freedom to do what most people take for granted.
Mr Brake urges Sutton residents and businesses to support Shopmobility's role in the community. Any resident who is interested in making a donation can contact the Shopmobility office on 020 8770 0691 or by email at Shopmo@Shopmobility.IDPS.co.uk
