Davey Delight at Kingston Hospital Cancer Unit Success12.31.04pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 19th Dec 2006 Edward Davey, Liberal Democrat MP for Kingston and Surbiton, is delighted that preparatory work for the new the new cancer unit, "Sir William Rous", has now begun as Kingston Can appeal has met its target. Kingston Hospital's new cancer unit will provide the local community with the latest equipment that can give same day diagnosis and outpatient chemotherapy treatment without patients having to travel long distances to cancer centres. The funding for the unit has been achieved through donations from the Royal Marsden Hospital of £1.3m, £630k from Macmillan cancer support, and local efforts that have raised a massive £2.8m through Kingston Can appeal. Edward Davey hopes the building of the unit, which will start in February, runs smoothly to meet the March 2008 completion date. Edward Davey said, "Kingston Can's amazing appeal is achieving its fundraising target, and this is great news for our area. "I am delighted that cancer patients in Kingston will be able to receive same day diagnosis and outpatient chemotherapy treatment at their local hospital, once the unit is built. "The new unit will also be able to provide counselling. Far too often only the physical side of the disease is cared for by our health service. "This really is a community achievement, with lots of the funding for the new unit coming from the local area raised by Kingston Can, congratulations to everyone involved."
