45 Major Injuries in Local Companies Last Year

7.47.55pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 12th Dec 2006

The latest figures from the Health and Safety Executive show that the Borough had 1 fatal injury and 44 major injuries at work in 2005/6 (and another 145 causing workers to be off for over 3 days). The figures were the third lowest in London (Westminster had 3 deaths and 256 major injuries) and roughly half the level of neighbouring Hounslow. In London as a whole there were 12 deaths and 12,530 major injuries.

Vincent Cable MP said: "These figures are timely since, with legislation is going through Parliament - which I support - strengthening the law on corporate manslaughter, it is useful to remember that Britain still experiences a large toll of deaths and injuries at work. We are fortunate in that the largely office-based employment locally leads to few injuries but there are still a fair number in construction sites in particular."
