Nadia Eweida Close to Victory in BA Dress Battle

12.05.38pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 27th Nov 2006

British Airways' announcement that it is reconsidering its uniform policy goes a long way to resolving the dispute with ground staff worker and Twickenham resident, Nadia Eweida, over her wish to wear a cross at work. Vincent Cable MP, who has supported her through the dispute, said that "this statement goes a long way to defusing the conflict. BA's earlier position of accommodating some religious wear but not a Christian cross was a totally untenable position. After the Archbishops of Canterbury and York, and large numbers of MPs, had joined in the criticism, BA was left looking very foolish and isolated.

"Great credit should go to Nadia for her stand, despite being denied an income; her Christian friends; her union, the T&GWU; and other who have rallied behind her. I hope, now, she can get back to work on the basis of a compromise which respects BA's dress code but also respects her wish to wear and display a symbol of her faith."
