Burstow Welcomes Water Company's u-turn on Drought Restrictions4.06.35pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 13th Nov 2006
Paul Burstow, MP for Sutton and Cheam, has welcomed news that Sutton and East Surrey Water has decided not to pursue an application to renew its drought order. Mr Burstow also took the opportunity to commend local residents' efforts to save water. The original drought order came into effect on the 27th May following an unusually dry winter period. The order restricts all non-essential use of water such as the washing of a vehicle or windows using a hosepipe. Sutton and East Surrey Water have decided to leave the order to lapse after customer demand for water over the summer months was lower than usual. Commenting on the news, Paul Burstow said: "I am delighted that the Water Company feels that these restrictions can now be lifted. This decision has only been made possible by the sensible actions of people in Sutton in using water sparingly." "Together with the council's environmental initiatives to cut congestion and increase recycling we can all be proud that Sutton is doing its bit to protect our environment for future generations"
