Alcoholics Anonymous Offers Local Help12.41.49pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 13th Nov 2006 A delegation from Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) met Vincent Cable MP this week to raise awareness of the work the voluntary body is doing locally. At present there are 14 meetings taking place every week in the Borough, 45 within a couple of miles, for people seeking help with their drink problems. It is estimated that only 1 in 10 of local people who need help seek it or are aware of the possibility of being helped. Vincent Cable said: "Alcoholics Anonymous is a truly remarkable organisation which in its 50 year history has helped tens, perhaps hundreds, of thousands of alcoholics. It relies on former problem drinkers helping others - and remains strictly anonymous which is why it has no public face. And it is entirely self financing, not relying on charitable or government funding. "Research suggests that over 4 million people, 1 in 13, have become dependent on alcohol and this is a major cause of crime, domestic violence and divorce. It is vital that those who realise that they have a problem and want to stop have someone to turn to. I have been specifically asked not to publicise any individuals or meeting places but only the helpline - 0845 769 7555."
