I Count - Stop Climate Change12.42.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 6th Nov 2006
Liberal Democrat MP for Kingston and Surbiton, Edward Davey attended the I Count - Stop Climate Change rally on 4th November held in London's Trafalgar Square. I Count was organised to demand government action on Climate Change. "I Count" was designed to inspire personal and political action and counter the view that climate change is too big a problem to fix. It was hoped that by the thousands attending a rally on the eve of global climate change talks in Nairobi, the UK Government will be forced to negotiate an international deal to keep global warming levels of less than 2 degrees centigrade. Campaigners are also keen to put pressure domestically on the Government, to introduce a tough Climate Change Bill that would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 3% per year, into this years Queens speech. Edward Davey MP said "The rally provided thousands from around the country the chance to show the Government that they don't want words, they want action, and now. People aren't prepared to half heartedly address Climate Change; they know we need real action now, before it is too late!" "Some think that Climate Change is too big an issue to tackle. Or that it is just alarmist. Yet if we fail to act and the alarmists are right the result will be disaster: I am not prepared to take that chance and neither are the thousands that joined the I Count event at Trafalgar Square."
