Tom Brake Speaks Out Against Changes to Maternity Policy

Tom Brake today roundly criticized proposed changes to current Epsom and St Helier maternity ward policies. A leaked letter to Ruth Carnall, Chief Executive of London Strategic Health Authority, revealed that proposed changes to policy for mothers going into labour before their 34th week had apparently been made with no attempt at consulting the public or consultation with lead neonatology and consultant paediatricians.

Tom Brake commented, 'It is claimed by clinicians that the decision to move mothers who have gone into early labour will pose a significant risk, and serves no medical purpose. We must know why clinicians were not consulted, and whether the changes will indeed pose a significant risk to mothers. If they do, the Trust will need to go straight into discussions with clinicians to find a way forward that does not pose a risk to patients.

Tom Brake will be speaking on Channel Four news tonight on these, and other issues surrounding St Helier Hospital and the NHS.
