MP Backs 'Climate Neutral' School

11.54.44am GMT Tue 26th Sep 2006

Hampton School has become the first school in the country and, they believe, in the world, to go Climate Neutral. Vincent Cable, MP, launched the programme in the school on Monday September 25th.

The school's policy is to offset all the emissions in the daily running of the school site, including commuting - by helping energy and forestry projects in developing countries; and in addition to reduce waste on the school site.

Vincent Cable said that: "Hampton School is pioneering in the very best sense. It is all very well for politicians and pundits in the media to lecture and preach about global climate change; but if environmentally sensible action is to be taken it will be based on understanding and commitment at a grass roots level, by the younger generation, through the schools. The Hampton project combines education and practical action and I hope other schools will follow its example".
