Blair's Ninety Day Detention Crusade Justly Defeated - Teather

6.38.07pm GMT Wed 9th Nov 2005

Commenting on the defeat of the Government's plans to hold people without charge for ninety days, Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather said:

"Ninety days without charge borders on internment. The Liberal Democrats have from the outset fought against this part of the bill. We will now continue to defend the liberties of the British people in the House of Lords.

"All sides of the House are willing to reach consensus on how we tackle terrorism. Yet Tony Blair has gone on a personal crusade to ram this through Parliament. This is a massive blow to Tony Blair personally. He has refused to listen to the public, law lords and his own backbenchers; now he has been justly defeated."
