TEATHER CALLS FOR GOVERNMENT TO INCREASE AIR TRANSPORT ASSISTANCE IN KASHMIR

3.48.43pm GMT Tue 11th Oct 2005

Local Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather yesterday appealed to the Government to grant more air transport assistance to the stricken region of Kashmir.

The Brent East MP made her appeal to the Secretary of State for International Development, Hillary Benn in the House of Commons. The Liberal Democrat MP was only in the region last week.

Local Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather said:

"The mountainous terrain makes the rescue and recovery operation extremely difficult. Many constituents have told me of their concern for friends and relatives living in remote areas, air transport will be vital in gaining access to these areas.

"Our thoughts and minds are with those who have lost or who still not heard from relatives in the region. It is vital we all get behind the relief effort so that we can begin the rebuilding process in Kashmir."
