Liberal Democrat-led boroughs have shown they are leading the way on environmental sustainability in London, scooping five out of ten awards at this year's Sustainable Transport Awards ceremony, run by Transport for London. The Awards won by Lib Dem boroughs included 'Best Council Travel Plan' won for Sutton Council and 'Sustainable Transport Borough of the Year' won by Islington Council.

Lib Dem led Lambeth and Kingston upon Thames also picked up awards for their sustainable travel campaigns.

The awards saw finalists from the 33 London councils board the 'Dixie Queen' to find out who would walk away with the coveted prizes as they set sail on the river Thames throughout the evening.

Councillor Colin Hall, lead councillor for the environment in Sutton, which was the only borough to pick up two awards, said: "Winning these awards is an outstanding achievement and goes to show that Liberal Democrat councils across London really do take environmental sustainability very seriously."
