Whitton's Iceland Car Park Fence Dispute Grows

11.27.41am UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 28th Feb 2005

The continued row over the Iceland car park in Whitton took a new twist when a 79 year old pensioner took a bad fall after becoming entangled in the broke wire fence which surrounds the site. For over a year, local residents led by Mrs Rosie Wood and supported by Twickenham MP Vincent Cable and local councillors have been pressing Iceland and the landlord to do something about he car park and fence. They came forward with proposals but the Council rejected them on planning grounds.

Vincent Cable said: "The right hand of the Council does not know what the left hand is doing. While it is the owners' obligation to deal with the problem, surely the Council should be facilitating a solution, not obstructing it.

"Mr Biddiscombe contacted me in some distress having had a bad fall over the protruding fence. It could have been anyone. I want the Council to issue instructions to remove the fence as a hazard, until the planning problems are sorted out."
