MP Attacks "Sick" Road Safety Valentine Cards

4.00.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 21st Feb 2005

A substantial number of young women in the Twickenham area received a Valentine card last week inside which was a picture of a mangled wreak of a car and an unsigned hand written greeting: "I'm sorry; I didn't mean to kill you; I was driving too fast; I really miss you". The cards appear to have come from the London Safety Camera Partnership and a government quango concerned with road safety.

MP Vincent Cable said: "It is understandable that agencies responsible for road safety should try to communicate a strong message about the dangers of reckless driving. But this particular campaign is a bit sick. It appears to have been targeted at young women; not young men. For young women who are good, safe, drivers the message is gratuitous. Some of those who received the card were sickened and angered by it. I have written to the transport secretary to ask him to investigate how much tax payers money was spent on this stunt".
