250 fewer Dentists in 2004 - Teather

3.00.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Fri 28th Jan 2005

Sarah Teather, Liberal Democrat spokesperson for London, today revealed that last year over 250 dentists stopped practising in the capital.

Parliamentary answers show that this is on top of 231 leavers in 2003 and a huge 323 leavers in 2002.

Liberal Democrat London Spokeswoman Sarah Teather MP said:

"At a time when Londoners often can't find an NHS dentist these figures are shocking.

"It's no wonder half of all children in England and three out of five adults aren't even registered with dentists. With hundreds leaving each year in London alone, the Government have let dentistry whither on the vine.

They should listen to dentists and pay them enough to stay practising. And they should listen to the public and increase access dramatically."
