In two by-elections last night the Liberal Democrats saw off challenges from the Conservatives.

In Hornsey & Wood Green, Lib Dem Martin Newton increased the Lib Dem majority in Fortis Green ward by 19%, with 1345 votes - a 58% share. In second place the Conservatives had 550 votes, and Labour were third with 298 votes - just 13%.

Kingston's newest councillor Rachel O'Connor took 948 votes seeing off the Conservatives with a majority of 435. Labour were a distant third with just over 200 votes.
