LABOUR SURVIVED FIRST BATTLE BUT YET TO HAVE WON TUITION FEES WAR

10.38.34am GMT Wed 28th Jan 2004

Commenting on the tuition fees vote Liberal Democrat Mayoral candidate Simon Hughes MP said:

"Tonight's vote is far from the end of the story. The London Labour MPs who propped up the government will be under mounting pressure in the days ahead.

"I call upon London students and their families to double the pressure on their elected representatives to stop this unfair and unworkable policy of tuition fees.

"Mr Blair and Mr Clarke have survived the first battle but they have not won the war."
