Responding to the decision by the Labour National Executive Committee to readmit Ken Livingstone to the party, but only if he makes a commitment of loyalty next month, Liberal Democrat Mayoral Candidate, Simon Hughes MP, said:

"Today's Labour Executive decision proves that there is still significant unease about Ken Livingstone's loyalty.

"This proposed remarriage is clearly not made in heaven but simply one of convenience. There is no evidence that either Mr Livingstone or Labour have changed their ways since they were last a couple.

"All Londoners will look forward to hearing Mr Livingstone's declaration of loyalty to New Labour policies. If he wants to stand under New Labour colours then presumably he will be expected to sign up to national policies such as top-up fees, foundation hospitals and privatisation of the Tube."
