URGENT QUESTIONS MUST BE ASKED ABOUT ROYAL SECURITY

12.00.00pm GMT Wed 19th Nov 2003

Commenting on the undercover reporter who exposed flaws in royal security by gaining a job as a footman at Buckingham Palace, Liberal Democrat Mayoral candidate Simon Hughes MP, said:-

"These revelations pose serious questions about the security surrounding the Palace and the Royal family. This breech is deeply disturbing, and Palace security must work alongside the Met Police to discover how such a worrying lapse could have happened.

"When so much money and manpower has been spent on preventing any attempts by terrorists to attack the President of the United States while in London it is incredible that a journalist can sneak in through the tradesman's entrance.

"Coming so soon after the break in at Windsor Castle, an urgent investigation must be done to make sure that this never happens again."
