Campaigning for London in Parliament, in Europe and in the London Assembly

Hughes on Norris

12.00.00am GMT Sun 16th Feb 2003

Simon Hughes MP, commenting on the selection of Steve Norris as Tory Mayoral candidate said:

"I don't underestimate his challenge but Steve has been a London government minister before and Londoners and not remember that period as a golden age."

"Steve has also been a mayoral candidate once before and that was not a total success either."

"Londoners are certainly becoming disillusioned with the Labour Party but there is no sign that they will embrace the Conservatives instead."

"Steve Norris is certainly beatable next year. If I am selected by the Liberal Democrats as our candidate next month I intend to beat him and Ken and take over as mayor."
