Campaigning for London in Parliament, in Europe and in the London Assembly

Bobbies on the beat

Written by Simon Hughes on Thu 29th Apr 2004

A quick trip on the Victoria line brought me to Brixton where myself and Charles Kennedy, the Liberal Democrat leader, were talking a safer greater London. I am passionate about placing local policing and local priorities at the top of the agenda. A central plank of the Liberal Democrat vision for London is giving each neighbourhood a 'community police force'. London's neighbourhoods need dedicated police and community support officers who know the area and the people. Headed by a sergeant on a four year contract these officers would not be removed from their local duties except under extraordinary circumstances. These 'familiar faces' would work closely with the local council to establish what the local priorities are and the best way to get to grips with them. It was great to hear my ideas receiving such warm acclaim on Coldharbour lane. Our walkabout was followed by a very positive session with the head of Lambeth police, Chief Superintendent Richard Quinn.

As mayor I will work with police to ensure that residents of Lambeth and London have the security within their own communities that they so deserve.

Till next time friends.
